I recently had someone ask me about going to college and majoring in music. What did I think? Here's two smarter people than I that sum up my view on the topic:

This amazingly simple but inspiring instrument uses granular synthesis to create awesome textures. The controls are unbelievably simple: two sliders to adjust the start and end points. By keeping the controls so simple and obvious that three year old could get it, it frees up our minds to think about the music, and what we could do with just two controls.

It’s the first day of your career. You had no fan base, no routines, nobody relying on you. How would you do it? 

My friend Greg has ruined my life this week. He sent me this little website that measures your timing to see if you have “perfect” timing, and I’m hooked. If you want to spend a good chunk of your day obsessing over a game, check it out. 

I got a beautiful bracelet from a friend a few weeks ago as a gift. The friend really went all out with it- it was partially leather, with a steel finish and my name inscribed on it. It’s beautiful, and I couldn’t wait to put it on.

Only one problem. I’m huge. At 6’6”, everything on me including my wrists are massive. The next day I was wrestling with the tiny clasp trying to get it to buckle while straining the other side as tight as I could. I felt like my fingers were doing yoga, but I just couldn’t get it on..

I was shocked to find out that world class musicians, musicians that are 10x better than the musicians around them, usually charge exactly the same as an average musician. 

I never post about my personal life, but this one’s a biggie. 

Keyboard Magazine has been running a free chops building series on their blog every week for the last few weeks, and I'm digging every single one. They cover great lessons from everyone from Billy Joel to Radiohead. If you're looking to up your abilities, this is an amazing way to do it. 

I always used to roll my eyes when musicians talked about the “vibe” of a gig being good or bad. “Dang hippies” I’d think, glad that I was a little more logical than they are. It didn’t help that most of the people I knew who talked that way smoked weed.
